Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu is a type of bodywork developed in Japan based on Ayurvedic and Chinese teachings.

As in Ayurveda and Acupuncture, the intent of a Shiatsu session is to maintain or restore the free flow of energy through your body's meridians and energetic centers. Stagnant energy or imbalance is considered to be the cause of physical illness, so restoring proper energy flow and balance can prevent illnesses or help your body return to a healthy state.

To stimulate the flow of energy, the therapist applies pressure to tsubos--points along the energetic meridians. Depending on the level of tightness or blockage, the pressure may feel quite deep or moderate at different points, although the therapist uses consistent pressure throughout. Primarily, the pressure points are activated by leaning in with the thumbs and the elbows. At times, we also use gentle electrical stimulation to treat particularly painful areas.

This type of therapy is very methodical, working along invisible lines throughout the body. At each point, pressure is applied for a few seconds, then the therapist moves to the next tsubo. Because of the slow, methodical pace of the session, is can affect your body very deeply, promoting relaxation and renewal.

Shiatsu sessions can be done with you at virtually any degree of dress or undress. Any clothes worn during the session should be loose fitting so they do not constrict you, but otherwise it is entirely up to you and your preference. Shiatsu also provides an option for where it can be done--either on the massage table or on a mat on the floor. Either has advantages, so it depends on the individual session.
